Working Holiday Visa Subclass 417

Subclass 417 visa in Australia is more popularly known as a Working Holiday Visa. This visa category is structured for those eligible young adults who wish to have an extended holiday and work in the country to fund it. Both subclass 462 work and holiday visa and subclass 417 working holiday visas are designed for the young tourists of selected countries under holiday program visas. This visa is further categorised as –

First Working Holiday Visa – This visa allows eligible individual tourists of 18-30 years of age group (inclusive) and French, Canadian, and Irish citizens who are 18 to 35 year old (inclusive) to have an extended holiday while supplementing their fund by short- term work in the country.

Second Working Holiday visa- This visa allows eligible individual tourists of 18-30 years of age (inclusive) and French, Canadian, and Irish citizens 18 to 35 years old (inclusive), who have held or currently hold a working holiday visa (subclass 417) to have a second working holiday visa.

Third Working Holiday Visa- This visa allows individual eligible tourists of 18-30 years of age (inclusive) and French, Canadian, and Irish citizens who are 18 to 35 years old (inclusive), who have held or currently hold a second working holiday visa (subclass 417) to have a third working holiday visa.

Subclass 417 visa is a temporary permit to the Country. Usually valid for up to one year. This visa allows its holders to-

What are the Eligibility Requirements for a Working Holiday Visa 417

To be eligible to apply for a subclass 417 visa, the applicant must meet the Department’s required eligibility conditions.

  • The applicant must be a holder of an eligible passport of any of the following countries–
    • Belgium
    • Canada
    • Republic of Cyprus
    • Denmark
    • Estonia
    • Finland
    • France
    • Germany
    • Hong Kong (Including British National Overseas passport holders)
    • Republic of Ireland
    • Italy
    • Japan
    • Republic of Korea
    • Malta
    • Netherlands
    • Norway
    • Sweden
    • Taiwan
    • United Kingdom
  • The applicant must be of the eligible age –
    • Canadian, French and Irish citizens 18 to 35 years old (inclusive).
    • 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) for all other eligible countries.
  • The dependent children must not accompany the applicant.
  • The applicant must not have previously entered the country on a subclass 417 or subclass 462 visa. (for first working holiday visa)
  • The applicant must have completed at least three months of specified work in regional Australia on their first working holiday visa. (for second working holiday visa).
  • The applicant must have completed at least six months of specified work in regional Australia on their second working holiday visa. (for third working holiday visa).
  • The applicant must also enough funds to support their stay for the initial part of their holidays.
  • The applicant must meet all the health and character requirements of the visa category.
  • The applicant must agree to abide by and respect Australian laws.

For the second and third working holiday visa, the specified work refers to the full time paid employment in any of the following industries-

  • Plant and animal cultivation
  • Tree farming.
  • Fishing
  • Pearling
  • Construction and
  • Mining

Forty days – for 75% of applications (approx.). (For first and second working holiday visa.)
Three months – for 90% of applications (approx.). (For first and second working holiday visa.)
Processing time for a third working holiday visa is not fixed and changes based on the applicant’s profile and migration requirements. Generally, the verification procedure for a temporary visa is less thorough than a permanent visa category.
