The carer visa (Subclass 836) is a permanent visa that allows applicants to come to Australia to provide care to an Australian relative or a member of their family unit who requires support owing to a long term or permanent medical condition. Subclass 836 requires an applicant to be sponsored by their relative or their relative’s partner. An applicant who already holds a substantive visa and is in Australia can apply for this visa. Subclass 836 visa allows an applicant to be a carer for their nearest relatives or a member of their family residing in Australia. The relative can be the applicant’s parent, partner, child, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, grandparent, grandchild (or step-equivalent) and be ordinarily resident in Australia and must be one of the following:

• an Australian citizen
• an Australian permanent resident
• an eligible New Zealand citizen

Such relatives should not have any other alternative or reasonable access to care in Australia. The kind of assistance and care expected from the applicant must be of a type that cannot reasonably be availed from any other relative or from welfare, hospital, medical, nursing, or community services in Australia. The subclass 836 carer visa has been framed to allow an individual to care for a relative in Australia. Therefore, the individual must fully understand the essentials of what kind of care is required, and the individual must be willing and able to provide the required care and support.

Besides, the carer visa requires an applicant to be sponsored by an eligible Australian relative (above 18 years of age) or their partner, and such sponsorship should be approved by the Department. The sponsor must provide a written undertaking to ensure financial assistance, support, and accommodation for the applicant, and accompanying applicants, for the first two years of their stay in Australia.

The relative in need of care and support must either have a long term medical condition and inability to perform day to day activities or should require reasonable support in order to be able to take care of the family member suffering from a medical condition. For the purpose of this, an assessment of their medical condition from an authorized health service centre would be required. The medical assessment certificate should be submitted along with the visa application.
