Temporary Work Visa

Australia has an immense range of visa options for those who wish to live and work in the country. The country offers many opportunities for foreign nationals to visit the country to work either on a temporary or a permanent basis. A temporary work visa is designed by the Australian government to allow individuals to come to the country to work in a specific field or under a specific employer as per the visa conditions.
The holder of a work visa in Australia enjoys the same safety rights and employment benefits as any other native of the country. The Department usually asks for a successful skill assessment test to grant a positive work visa. The candidate applying for a work visa to the country must also ensure that their skill assessment result is valid (twelve months) at the time of filing the application. Relevant skill assessment (based on one’s occupation) must be taken from registered skill assessment agencies.

Temporary work visa can be further categorised as-

Temporary Activity

A Temporary Activity route is designed for those who possess specific skills and wish to stay in Australia to do a specific type of work temporarily. A temporary visa primarily refers to all the visa categories that have a restricted validity in terms of time. Extending your stay before the expiry of your initial visa is a simple process to increase your stay duration in the country.

A temporary activity visa facilitates an individual to come to the country temporarily for-

  • Participating in certain events that are endorsed by the government of Australia.
  • Participating in an Australian research project.
  • Work for the entertainment industry in the country.
  • Participating in a certain special program that is approved by the Department of home affairs (provides opportunities for cultural enrichment, youth exchange, or for community benefits).
  • Participating in a religious work (on a full-time basis).
  • As a crew member for a superyacht (employed).
    g. Participate in a skilled position against any staff exchange arrangement.
  • Participating in sports competitions (high-level) or sports training programs.
  • Doing domestic work (on a full-time basis) towards the household arrangements of certain foreign executives (senior).
  • participating in specific activities at the invitation of an organization (Australian).

Employer Nominated Work

A temporary employer nomination allows the individuals with specific skills, who are nominated by their employer, to stay and work in the country temporarily. This visa condition is structured to fulfil the gap between the demand and supply of specific skills in the Australian labour market. The holder of a temporary employer nomination may have to work under the same employer with whom he was nominated. The role that an employee is nominated to must be the same occupation for which the Expression of Interest was filed by the candidate.

Regional Employer Sponsored Work

A regional employer-sponsored work allows individuals with specific skills, who are nominated by their employer, to stay and work in the particular regions of the country on a temporary basis.

In certain regions of the country where the specific skills are not available easily, this visa allows the employer to meet the shortage in specific skills by hiring foreign skilled individuals. However, the candidate must possess the specific skills to fulfil the nominated job role.

Regional Areas- most locations of Australia outside major cities such as Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne have been classed as designated regional areas for migration purposes. The Department of Home Affairs has circulated the list of postcodes considered as designated regional areas for the purpose of the Australian visas. Some of the popular regional areas include Perth, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Sunshine Coast, Lake Macquarie, Geelong, Newcastle, Wollongong, and Canberra.

The usual processing time for the Work visa varies from individual to individual based on their profile and the Department’s assessment procedure. Furthermore, the processing time of the visa application may be a little higher than usual if –

  • The candidate has not filled it correctly
  • The candidate has not included all the documents needed
  • Department need more information
  • When the Department thoroughly verify the documents
  • Eligibility is not a continuing one

The Department generally asks for additional information both from the candidates and/ or external agencies for the application’s decision. The application form should be complete in every aspect and must be submitted along with the requisite fees. If the fees are not paid in full, the visa application might not be considered at all by the Department. Additional charges may apply for bringing each member of the family unit. The processing method and assessment system for a temporary visa are less thorough than a permanent visa category. The candidate must also possess the specific health and character requirements as per the visa conditions and eligibility.
