Which Post-Study Work Visa is Right for You? A Complete Breakdown

Australia is a top destination for international students, offering many employment opportunities and a prosperous lifestyle. One of the most significant advantages for students is the post-study work visa, which allows them to live and work in Australia after finishing their studies. This blog includes the types of post-study work visas, their requirements, and how to apply.

What is a Post-Study Work Visa?

The post-study work visa allows international students to live and work in Australia for a specific period after finishing their studies. This visa aims to help students gain professional experience and contribute to the Australian economy.

Types of Post-Study Work Visas

The Australian Government provides several types of post-study work visas. Here’s a breakdown of the main options:

  1. Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)- Graduate Work-stream

This visa is for students who have recently graduated from Australian institutions and have skills that are in demand in the local job market. It allows graduates to stay for up to 18 months and work full-time. Applicants must apply within six months of completing their course.

  1. Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)- Post-Study Work-stream

This is the most popular option for international students. It permits recent graduates from Australian universities to stay for 2 to 4 years, based on their qualifications. Like the Graduate Work-stream, students must apply within six months of graduation. Family members can also be included in the application.

  1. Skilled Recognized Graduate Visa (Subclass 476)

This visa is specifically for engineering graduates from recognized institutions. It allows them to work in Australia for up to 18 months. To be eligible, applicants must apply within two years of completing their degree and meet certain age and qualification criteria.

Additional Post-Study Work Arrangements

In November 2019, the Australian Government introduced new arrangements for students studying outside major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. These students may receive an extra one or two years of post-study work rights to encourage them to study in regional areas.
