Notably, the majority of applicants take this route, which stands as one of the key foundations of the new visa system.
For this visa stream, you need to satisfy requirements around occupation, earnings, work record, qualifications and English ability. Each part is reviewed in its own right but together they show if you are genuinely prepared to work in Australia.
The role you nominate must appear on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). That register is extensive. It spans hospital staff, teachers, and a wide set of skilled trades. Do not just glance at the job title. Match your ANZSCO code carefully with the official list so that eligibility is clear.
Starting from July 1, 2025, you must meet the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) of $76,515, which authorities will revise annually. However, this figure represents only one part of the test. Additionally, your contract must meet the market salary rate in Australia for your particular role. These dual checks ensure that overseas workers receive fair compensation compared with citizens doing the same work.
You should have at least a year of full‑time employment in the nominated role within the past 5 years. It cannot be vague work. It must be directly relevant, documented and recent enough to prove your skills remain current.

Eligibility exists across ANZSCO Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. These cover a wide range of professional and managerial work. However, there are exclusions. Trades positions under Major Group 3, drivers and machinery operators in Major Group 7 and labourers in Major Group 8 cannot apply. To qualify, you must show guaranteed annual pay that matches the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT). For applications made between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, the threshold is $141,210. No contract offering below this point will be accepted.

The Labour Agreement Stream caters to employers who have established a formal deal with the Australian government.
