There can be different and unique situations and scenarios where one is required to take such a call. But the decision to move to a new country is mostly supported by a reason or a purpose. Depending on the purpose that you are aiming for, different types of visas will apply to your circumstances and the occasion. Whether you intend to go on a holiday, or for study or work and reside in Australia temporarily or permanently, you will have to apply for a different Australian visa, accordingly.

Australia is an incredibly popular destination among migrants. The country has an immense range of opportunities to offer to those who want to migrate to another country for a better standard of living and to enjoy a quality life. • For short stays, holiday, tour, and travel
  • To join family members who reside in Australia

  • Applying as a refugee for humanitarian protection, seeking asylum
  • As a stateless person
  • As someone who needs permission to stay for activities pertaining to art and culture
  • To participate in sports and cinema
  • For discharging official duties

Each person who applies or aspires to apply for a visa has a different situation or purpose. The Australian visa Department and system are very well aware of this diversity. Hence they have structured a wide range of visa classes, subclasses, and categories to cater to your needs. They have set forth a simplified and straight forward procedure to make an application.

The Australian Government generally structures a visa to allow foreign nationals to stay in the country on a temporary or permanent basis, suiting their visa application needs and circumstances. Visas can be separated into two broad categories as per the time validity they provide: temporary and permanent. Permanent visas allow the visa holder to reside permanently in the host country, whereas a temporary visa allows the visa holder entry into the host country on a temporary basis.

There can be several reasons or instances where one might need to apply for an Australian visa, and they can be event-based or routine in nature. Keeping in mind the specific scenarios where a visa is required, the situations can be further categorized as-

Individual– When or why you need a visa depends on what you would like to do and where you’d like to go. There are innumerable reasons why one might require a visa. There can be specific instances or personal needs that might necessitate an individual’s immigration request to Australia. The visa structure here facilitates both short term and long term stays in Australia. The type of Australian visa you apply for depends on the need and purpose of your visit.

Depending on your reason for applying for an Australian visa, you will need to fulfil specified criteria and present documentary evidence at the time of application.

An individual may prefer moving to Australia for higher studies or deliberate continuing work in Australia after completion of studies. There are a number of facilities and privileges that come with a student visa in Australia. The Australian education sector is highly revered. The Government has also structured Graduate visas for those seeking work post studies. Another popular reason that draws people to Australia is Tourism. One may visit Australia as a tourist or a temporary visitor on a visit for a specified short term purpose. The Department has rolled out e visitor and tourist visas to facilitate the comfortable and fun stay for such applicants. Thus the Government has devised end number of schemes and plans for the varied immigration needs of individual applicants aspiring to travel to Australia.

Family– Australian citizens or permanent residents might wish to invite their family members over to join them temporarily or permanently in Australia. How they do this will depend on whether they are a visa holder or not, and if they are visa holders, what rights and entitlements they have. Family visas in Australia have been designed to provide a pathway for such eligible family members to sponsor their parents, children, spouse, or partner to be with them in Australia.

There are several options to bring your family members to the country. If you are planning to migrate to Australia, you can bring your family with you to the country on dependent visas, parent visas, child and partner visas.

General Skilled Migration– While the country has a diverse range of immigration access open to the world, its skilled migration program is the most common category. General Skilled Migration Visas allow skilled foreign workers to migrate to Australia on a permanent basis. To qualify for a visa under this program, an applicant must be skilled in an occupation that has high demand in Australia. Applicants are invited to apply for the GSM program visas based on various factors such as their job occupation, work experience, educational qualification, and English ability.

Australian skilled visas involve submitting of expression of interest, securing positive skill assessment, and ensuring state or family sponsorship (where required), and passing the points test (such as for subclass 189 and 190 visas). There are many skilled visas that the Department has rolled out, such as subclass 189,190, 491, 482, and 485, and an aspirant looking to obtain a skilled immigration visa in Australia is required to analyse his prospects to ensure if he/she qualified to work in an eligible skilled occupation in Australia and can meet all other requirements of the concerned visa subclass.

PR Pathway– Individuals can become permanent residents of Australia in different ways. Young aspirants or students can opt for Trade or University courses, to begin with. They can apply for a student visa and study a trade or a university course that educates them for an occupation featuring on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). They can subsequently apply for a post-study work visa or the subclass 485 visa. While on a 485 visa, the individual can gather the requisite experience and skills to secure a positive skills assessment. After possessing adequate education and work experience, the applicant can then plan to apply for eligible visas such as subclass 482, 491, 494, or even subclass 189 or 190 if they secure sufficient points and qualify the requirements.

The General Skilled Migration program can help such students later secure a permanent visa based on their skills and work experience. This program does not require an employer to sponsor them. There are a number of pre-requisites that must be ensured, such as possessing the required skills and English language ability and passing the points test. Points for skilled migration are based on various factors such as your age, English ability, and employment and education history. In some cases, state government nomination is necessary to fulfil the requirements or to gather more points for your application.

There are plenty of other ways of securing a permanent resident in Australia; some common pathways are the family stream, workstream, and business stream permanent visas. The above-mentioned information is inclusive but not exhaustive. There are several other visa choices available to travel to Australia. Please reach out to our immigration agents to know details about the available visa categories as per your needs and eligibility.

The general processing time for an individual visa depends highly on the visa conditions and the applicant’s personal profile. The Department may ask for additional information from both the external and internal agencies involved. The standard processing method and time should be kept in mind before lodging the visa application form. The assessment method and provision for a temporary visa is less thorough than a permanent visa category. Hence the processing of a temporary visa is usually lower than a permanent visa category subject to the requirements of a particular visa assessment.
