Canada Relaxes Super Visa Rules from January 2025

The Canadian Government has changed Super Visa requirements, making the process more open to parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

  • People who want to apply can now do so with a valid health insurance policy, even one from outside Canada.
  • The health insurance policy must last for at least one year and cover at least CAD 100,000.
  • These new rules will start on January 28, 2025.

Canada Super Visa: New Health Insurance Rules

The Canadian government has eased health insurance rules for Super Visa applicants. The new policy allows candidates to get health insurance from non-Canadian insurers for their Super Visa application.

Before, applicants had to buy health insurance only from Canadian providers. These changes aim to make the Super Visa process simpler, so parents and grandparents can visit and stay with their families in Canada more. The new policy will start on January 28, 2025.

Rules for Non-Canadian Health Insurance Policies

A non-Canadian health insurance policy will be valid for a Super Visa application if it meets these requirements:

  • The Insurance Companies Act must authorize the policy, and the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) must regulate it.
  • The OSFI list of regulated financial institutions must include the insurance provider.
  • An insurer doing business in Canada must issue the policy.
  • The policy must be valid for at least one year and offer coverage of CAD 100,000 or more, which includes healthcare, hospital stays, and getting back home.
  • The policyholder must pay for the policy in full upfront or through scheduled deposits.

Note: Super Visa applicants need to show proof they’ve paid for health insurance to the border services officer when they arrive in Canada.
